History of Birthdays
The tradition of celebrating birthdays began centuries ago in Europe. Only kings and royalty were recognized as important enough to celebrate their birthdays. Later, children were included in birthday celebrations.
The first children's birthday parties called kinderfeste, originated in Germany. The word kinderfeste comes from the two German words "kinder" meaning children and "fest" meaning festival or party.
It was feared that evil spirits were attracted to people on their birthdays. To protect them from harm, friends and family would help celebrate their birthday by spending time with the birthday person, bringing them good wishes, thoughts and presents. Hats and noisemakers were used at birthday parties, with the thought that the noisemakers were also a way to scare away the evil spirits.
Today's birthdays include celebrations with birthday cakes, songs and gifts.
