The following is to help the groom's mother understand the traditional responsibilities of the mother of the groom.
Upon receiving the news of the engagement, the mother of the groom should initiate contact between the two families, introducing herself and her husband to the bride's parents if they do not already know each other.
She may wish to make a call to the bride's parents and tell them how happy she is about the engagement. If they live close by she may wish to invite them to their home or to dinner at a restaurant. The couple may be invited also. If they live far away, she may wish to send a friendly letter to the bride's parents. She also:
helps prepare the guest list for the groom and his family, making sure that the addresses and zip codes are correct
selects attire that complements the mother of the bride's attire. Her dress or gown should not be the same color of the bridesmaids or the bride's mother. If the bride's mother wears a long dress or gown, the mother of the groom should also, and if the bride's mother wears a short dress, the groom's mother should wear a short dress.

along with the groom's father, plans and hosts the rehearsal dinner. The rehearsal dinner can be a simple get together in the church hall, a catered event, a cookout with paper plates, or a dinner in a restaurant. Everyone who takes a part in the ceremony is invited to the dinner. It is proper etiquette to invite the spouse or significant other of those participating in the wedding, and the parents of the children in the wedding. If having an informal dinner, often out-of-town relatives and close guests are invited.
